Biomineralization & Biochemistry Lab
In our lab, we study biomineralization. In this process, nature can create amazing structures such as bones, teeth or mollusk shells. We seek to understand how biomacromolecules control the mineralization of calcium phosphate and carbonate, leading to the formation of bone, dentin, otoliths, and otoconia. We study proteins, their structural properties, and post-transactional modifications (phosphorylation, glycosylation) and their direct effect on mineral formation. We use in vitro models to understand the mineralization of complex extracellular organic matrix.
